Start with reference points you can feel
Zero Celsius is 32 Fahrenheit, 20°C is 68°F, 30°C is 86°F, and 40°C is 104°F. Those anchors cover freezing conditions, a comfortable room, a hot day, and dangerous heat.
For travel or weather, an approximate sense is often enough. For cooking, science, medicine, or equipment limits, use the exact conversion rather than a mental shortcut.
The scales have different zero points and step sizes
To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply by 9/5 and add 32. To go back, subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9. The added 32 is why simply doubling a Celsius value fails, especially near freezing.
A change of 1°C equals a change of 1.8°F. That describes a temperature difference, not an absolute temperature; converting a change and converting a reading are related but not identical operations.
Be careful with negative temperatures
At -40, the two scales meet: -40°C equals -40°F. Between freezing and that crossover, casual shortcuts become especially unreliable because both the sign and offset matter.
When sharing a forecast internationally, write both units and keep the rounding sensible. Reporting 21.111°C for a 70°F room suggests precision the original measurement probably did not have.

- Keep the minus sign when converting cold temperatures.
